The right Meta ads agency for a Shopify brand already runs accounts at your monthly ad spend, sends Shopify purchases to Meta through the Conversions API, produces enough new creative to keep testing every week, and reconciles its results to Shopify orders. Check those four things first. Fees, tools and logos come after.

What should a Meta ads agency do for a Shopify brand?

A Meta ads agency for a Shopify brand should own four jobs: the data feed from Shopify to Meta, the campaign structure, a steady supply of new ads, and reporting that ties spend to new customers in Shopify. Anything less leaves a gap you will have to fill yourself.

The data feed matters most: Meta optimizes toward the purchases it receives, so missing or duplicated purchases teach it the wrong lesson.

Which type of Meta ads agency fits your monthly spend?

The best fit is an agency where your monthly ad spend sits close to its typical client's. Ask each agency for the median monthly spend across its current clients. If you sit far below it, you get the junior team. If you sit far above it, you may be the account they are still learning on.

Most agencies fall into one of six models. The names on any "best agency" list usually map to one of these:

A freelance media buyer

One person buys media in your account. This suits early stores still finding a winning product and offer, where the main need is a competent buyer and you can supply the ads.

A Meta-only boutique

A small team that specializes in Meta and often Instagram. It suits brands with a proven product that need sharper structure and testing, and that already have a creative source.

A creative-led performance agency

The agency produces ads and runs Meta, with creative as its strength. It suits brands where the account has stalled because the same few ads carry most of the spend.

An integrated growth agency

Media buying, creative, landing pages and measurement run by one team against one target, usually new-customer revenue at a set acquisition cost. It suits brands spending enough that the hand-offs between separate vendors have become the bottleneck.

A large full-service network

A big agency covering many channels, often including TV, retail media and PR. It suits brands that need one contract across many channels and have an internal team to direct it.

An in-house media buyer

Your own hire. It suits brands with steady spend, a strategist who can manage the role, and a separate creative engine. Our guide to hiring a DTC agency covers the in-house trade-off in more depth.

How much does a Meta ads agency cost?

Meta ads agencies charge in one of four ways: a flat monthly retainer, a percentage of ad spend, a tiered fee that steps up with spend, or a base fee plus a bonus tied to results. Few agencies publish their prices, so ask for the fee at your current spend and at double it before you sign.

A flat retainer is easy to budget but does not grow with the work. A percentage of spend scales with the account, and some brands read it as a reason to push spend. A results bonus lines up incentives only if the result is measured in Shopify, on new customers, by a method agreed before the first invoice.

Ask three more cost questions: is creative production inside the fee or billed per asset, is there a setup or audit fee, and what notice does the contract require to leave.

Should the agency produce the creative?

If you spend enough that new ads run out faster than you can make them, yes. Creative is the main lever left on Meta, and an agency that buys media but waits on your team for ads will spend most of its time asking for assets.

Ask how many distinct concepts the agency ships for an account like yours each month, in which formats, and how test results turn into the next brief. At DTCo, Pvolve's account moved from a few celebrity-led hero ads to a testing system with 465 ads produced, and half over half revenue grew 51%, spend grew 36% and bROAS improved 11% (case study). Our creative testing framework covers how that loop runs.

How should an agency handle the Conversions API on Shopify?

The agency should confirm that Shopify sends purchases to Meta server to server through the Conversions API, that browser and server events are deduplicated, and that Meta's reported purchases are checked against Shopify orders every week. Ask to see that check in the first month.

On Shopify, the Facebook and Instagram app sets this up through its customer data sharing setting. At the Standard level only the Meta pixel runs in the browser, and ad blockers can stop it. The Enhanced and Maximum levels add the Conversions API, which Shopify describes as sending the purchase event between Shopify and Facebook servers, so browser ad blockers cannot block it.

Sending the same purchase twice is the next trap. Meta treats a pixel event and a Conversions API event as the same purchase only when their event ID and event name match, and only if both arrive within 48 hours, according to Meta's deduplication documentation. A custom checkout script or a second tracking app can break that match and double count sales. Our post on iOS attribution explains why platform numbers and store numbers drift apart.

Do you need Meta ads and email retention under one team?

Only if the same people will plan offers, launches and promotions across both. What matters is that someone owns the calendar, so paid media and email do not compete for the same customers with different offers.

Some Meta agencies also run Klaviyo; others leave retention to a specialist. Either works with one promotional calendar and one definition of a new customer. Ask whether the agency reports new-customer revenue separately from returning-customer revenue, because Meta spend that mostly reaches existing customers can look efficient while the customer base stops growing. Our post on email, SMS and paid media covers how the two fit together.

Does Shopify Plus experience matter?

It matters when the agency will touch checkout, landing pages or tracking, because Shopify Plus brands often run custom checkout logic, multiple storefronts or international stores that change how purchases reach Meta. For pure media buying it matters less than experience at your spend level.

What to ask a Meta ads agency before you sign

Five questions separate most agencies quickly:

Red flags

Walk away from these answers

A guaranteed ROAS before the agency has seen your account. A refusal to work inside an ad account you own. Results with no dates or no spend level. Reporting that uses only Meta's attribution with no check against Shopify.

When DTCo is the right fit

DTCo manages paid media for DTC brands spending $150K to $15M a month on Meta, TikTok, Google and YouTube. We run Meta, creative production, funnels and measurement as one team, and we report in ORCA, our measurement platform, against new-customer revenue in the store.

That makes us a fit for Shopify brands at or above that spend where the limit is creative volume, attribution you can trust, or too many vendors pulling in different directions. Results from that work include BRUNT, from launch to nine figures in under two years with DTCo as its only growth partner (case study), and Curology, where CAC fell 30% in nine months without pulling back spend (results).

If your store spends well under $150K a month on ads, a freelance buyer or a Meta-only boutique will likely serve you better and cost less. See how DTCo runs paid media if you are in our range.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Meta ads agency for a Shopify brand?

The best Meta ads agency for a Shopify brand is the one whose typical client spends about what you spend, that sends purchases to Meta through the Conversions API, that produces new creative every month, and that reconciles results to Shopify orders. Ask each candidate for its median client spend before comparing anything else.

Which Meta ads agency fits a Shopify store doing $200K a month?

First check whether $200K is store revenue or ad spend, because agencies size clients by ad spend. A store doing $200K a month in revenue usually fits a freelance buyer or a Meta-only boutique. A brand spending $200K a month on Meta fits a creative-led or integrated growth agency that runs several accounts at that level.

How do Meta ads agencies charge Shopify brands?

Meta ads agencies charge a flat monthly retainer, a percentage of ad spend, a tiered fee that rises with spend, or a base fee plus a results bonus. Ask for the fee at your current spend and at double it, and whether creative production is included or billed per asset.

Does a Shopify brand need the Conversions API for Meta ads?

Yes. Shopify's Enhanced and Maximum data sharing levels add the Conversions API, which sends purchases from Shopify's servers to Meta's, so browser ad blockers cannot stop them. The pixel and server events then need matching event IDs so Meta counts each purchase once.

Should a Meta ads agency also make the ads?

For most brands spending enough to exhaust ads quickly, yes. Creative is the main lever on Meta, and an agency that waits on your team for new ads cannot test fast enough. Ask how many distinct concepts it ships each month and how results shape the next brief.

How long before a new Meta ads agency shows results?

Expect the first month to go to the audit, tracking fixes and the first round of creative tests. Judge the agency on a clear plan and clean data in month one, and on new-customer revenue and acquisition cost against Shopify from month two or three.
